Two-swing pre-shot routine

A structured routine — assess, pick a target, rehearse with two distinct practice swings, then commit — builds the consistency tour players rely on under pressure.

beginnerEvery ball on the range, not just 'serious' shots

How to perform it

  1. 1.Assess the shot: lie, distance, wind, risk and reward, then select a club.
  2. 2.Pick one specific target, not just a general area — a precise spot that accounts for hazards and pin position.
  3. 3.Take a first practice swing rehearsing a specific technical feel, if you're working on something.
  4. 4.Take a second practice swing with no technical thoughts at all — just rhythm, tempo and a visualisation of the shot shape.
  5. 5.Step in and execute without further deliberation.

What you should learn

  • A repeatable trigger that moves you from thinking to committed execution.
  • To separate technical rehearsal from the actual shot, so you're not thinking mechanically over the ball.

After a few weeks of practice

Pre-shot overthinking fades, your swings feel more committed, and the routine becomes automatic even under competitive pressure.
