Chipping & Pitching

Clock-position pitching

Using your lead arm's position at address and partway back as reference points builds a repeatable menu of swing lengths mapped to specific carry distances.

beginner5-10 balls per position per wedge, twice a week2-3 wedgesBallsA yardage-marked practice area

How to perform it

  1. 1.Pick two or three lead-arm 'clock' positions for the backswing, such as 9, 10 and 11 o'clock relative to address as 12.
  2. 2.Hit shots from each position with the same tempo and follow-through length every time.
  3. 3.Note the carry distance each position produces with a given wedge.
  4. 4.Build a simple personal chart of clock position to yardage for each wedge in your bag.

What you should learn

  • A repeatable, measurable reference for partial swings instead of guessing at 'feel'.
  • How consistent tempo, not just swing length, controls distance.

After a few weeks of practice

You'll have a reliable personal yardage system for partial wedge shots, and long/short misses on approach and layup shots become much rarer.
