Chipping & Pitching

Towel landing-spot

Placing a towel on your intended landing spot — not the hole — retrains your focus onto where the ball should land and release, the real skill behind good chipping.

How to perform it

  1. 1.Choose a chip and work out the ideal landing spot on the green, accounting for roll-out to the hole.
  2. 2.Place a towel or small marker at that landing spot.
  3. 3.Hit chips aiming to land the ball on or near the towel, ignoring the hole as your aim point.
  4. 4.Vary the lie and club used while keeping the same landing-spot focus.

What you should learn

  • To visualise and execute to a landing spot rather than aiming directly at the hole.
  • How roll-out changes with club selection and lie.

After a few weeks of practice

Your proximity to the hole on chips of varying length improves, and hole-fixation misses like skulls and chunks become less common.
