Putting

Putting gate

Two tees form a gate just wider than your putter head — clipping either one shows an off-path stroke before it costs you a putt.

beginner20 putts per session, 2-3 times a week4 tees (or 2 alignment sticks)

How to perform it

  1. 1.Push two tees into the green about a putter-head-width apart, just behind the ball on your intended line.
  2. 2.Optionally add a second, narrower gate a few inches in front of the ball to check your start line.
  3. 3.Stroke putts, making sure the putter passes through the gate without touching either tee.
  4. 4.Narrow the gate slightly as your stroke path becomes more consistent.

What you should learn

  • What a square, on-path putting stroke feels like.
  • Whether your misses are a path problem or a start-line problem.

After a few weeks of practice

Your stroke path straightens out and becomes more repeatable, and more putts start rolling on your intended line.
