Putting

One-handed putting

Putting with only your lead hand removes the over-mechanical, steering tendencies that creep into a two-handed stroke and restores natural touch.

How to perform it

  1. 1.Grip the putter with only your lead hand, trail hand off the club or resting behind your back.
  2. 2.Putt to a hole or target from short range, 3 to 6 feet, focusing purely on rolling the ball to the target.
  3. 3.Increase distance gradually as your control improves.
  4. 4.Reintroduce the trail hand, trying to preserve the same free-flowing feel you built one-handed.

What you should learn

  • What natural acceleration through the ball feels like without steering or manipulating the putter face.
  • To trust feel over mechanical control on the greens.

After a few weeks of practice

Your stroke accelerates through impact more smoothly, distance control improves, and any tendency to steer the putter with your trail hand fades.
