Lesson 5 of 7
Learn to strike the ball first, turf second, with a small swing.
~20 minMid-ironBalls
Steps
- 1.Using a short/mid iron, make a half-length backswing (hands to about waist height).
- 2.Swing through to a matching waist-high finish, focused only on ball-then-turf contact.
- 3.Check your divot (if any) — it should start just in front of where the ball was, not behind it.
- 4.Gradually lengthen the swing only once contact feels solid and repeatable.
Why it helps
Solid, centered contact matters far more for a beginner than swing speed — this builds the low point control everything else depends on.
Your assignment
Hit 20 half swings with a mid-iron, focusing only on strike quality — ignore distance and direction for now.
